Snakes

We have 3 snakes. They are baby garter snakes. Their names are Snake 1, Snake 2, Snake 3. Snake 1 and Snake 2 are quiet. Snake 3 is feisty. A good website about baby garter snakes is here: Raising Baby Garter Snakes . There is a link to click on to view a garter snake birth too.

Baby garter snakes can eat worms. We set up 30 gallon tank with a grass area and a dirt area and we are keeping it slightly moist. We added some things like bark for the snakes to crawl under. We caught some worms for them. One snake was found in a bunch of bark, one in our vegetable garden and one by our front steps. Garter snakes are not venomous and it may hurt a little if one bites you but it is not dangerous.

Here is the feisty snake in the corner of the cage.

Here is the grass area in the cage.

Here Colin holds all three snakes.

Here is one of the quiet snakes in a box.

Colin holds two snakes. It is interesting how they wind themselves around your fingers.

We measure the snakes. Snake 1 is 5 1/2 inches, snake 2 is 6 inches and snake 3 the feisty one is just over 6 1/2 inches. It was very very very hard to measure these snakes. They don't like to hold still at all!

We let the snake who was feisty go because he didn't seem happy in the cage. We'll keep the other two snakes for one more day to observe.

Most snakes aren't as scary as people think. We don't live in a place with many dangerous snakes. The only venomous snake in New Hampshire is the Timber Rattlesnake. There aren't many of them left and we have never seen one.

Garter snake, we see these the most.

Milk Snake, only Colin and a friend of ours who was visiting has seen one of these.
