Frogs

We have a lot of frogs around our house this summer. We live near a brook but we wanted a frog pond closer to the house. We used our old turtle sandbox because we don't reallty use it anymore. We let the rain and leaves gather and waited to see if frogs would use it for a pond. Last summer they did not. This summer lots of frogs have found our pond.

This is the biggest frog that lives in the turtle sandbox pond. Since this was taken now about 5 smaller frogs live in the pond.

Frog eggs are usually in clumps. We didn't find any frog eggs in our pond so far. We got this from google images.

Toad eggs are different, they are usually in threads. We had toad eggs last year which we foun at the lake near our house. The picture is not very big though so we chose this one from google images.

Frogs and toads both love to eat bugs. Toads like worms and caterpillars. For that reason it's easier to keep frogs in an outdoor pond than in a tank in our home. If you want to catch bugs for your frogs you can keep them in your house. It's fun to raise tadpoles and we did again this year but we let them go when they turned into frogs.

For tadpoles we made a land area and a water area in a 30 gallon aquarium. It is easy to do this by tilting the tank a bit. put a book under one end to make the water deeper on one end. It's very important for frog or toad tadpoles to be able to get out of the water when they get their legs. If they can't get to some land they will die!

The Wild Backyard Kids, who we are

Here is me, Hayley, with my favorite pet Spider my hamster. I'm 12 years old. My favorite color is blue. My favorite wild animal is a tiger. I like to be homeschooled because it's quicker and I have more time to do what I want. I like to take pictures and movies and will probably put some on this blog.

Here is me, Colin, with my favorite pet my hamster Giraffe. I'm 10 years old. My favorite color is orange. I like bugs a lot. My favorite creatures that I find in my yard are snakes and salamanders. When I grow up I want to own a pet shop, and be a chef. My favorite foods are tomatoes and noodles but not together.

Here is our little brother Tristan who is too little to write on this blog much, he's 8. This is at the lake, he's playing in sand, which is one of his favorite things. There is a mallard duck in the background, a female. Tristan likes sand, magnets and playdoh. Tristan also likes star wars and light sabers and chocolate. In fact he loves chocolate. Tristan says when he grows up he wants to be a scientist and an inventor attached. That means he wants to do both of those jobs. He will be good at that because he looks like a scientist sometimes and he likes to invent things.

This is our big brother, Trevor. He has just turned 13 and he's very hard to figure out these days. He says his favorite thing is video games but we know he loves his cat Shadow, who is also in this picture. We don't really understand Trevor much lately, he seems kinda boring now that he doesn't like to play much but maybe we will understand when we become teenagers.
